Hults Bruk Akka Axe Review

My wife got me a Hults Bruk Akka Axe for Christmas last year and I just started using it around the land lately. At first, I thought it was on a bit of the small size measuring roughly 23” for the usable handle and a 1.5lb head. I had the opportunity to use it for a bit of a survival approach since we needed some firewood because our heat went out.

I took it to the felled cherry tree in the front part of the property and figured I’d see if I can get some logs out of it for the fireplace. Even though the handle is a small, it feels great on the swing. The problem I had was throttling the amount of force to not overdue the swing, I’m use to a bit heavier head on the axe.

THe cutting of the down tree at the horizonal part of the tree worked really well. Also, note I didn’t sharpen the head at all, it was basically stock from the store. I got through the 10” round tree pretty quickly without breaking much of a sweat. I’m definitely a fan. The more I used it the better I felt about it. An axe is one of my staple tools living on a bit of land, since a lot of power tools can die pretty easily. The axe is purely yourself and the tool. I’d still use a maul for splitting wood, but for cutting the initial logs its a great axe.

There was only one small glitch, the handle wood at the top split at the metal wedge piece. On consecutive cuts the head slowly worked its way off, luckily I noticed it. That would of been great right? An axe head flying into the wind, or a tree and bouncing off into my body. It didn’t happen, I managed to bang it back on for a couple more logs and then the best part of all.

I sent an email to the company Hults Bruk and they got back to me pretty quickly. A couple back and forths with pictures and some background on how it happened and voila a new handle arrived in the mail. For a tool company, great customer service is a must and that adds to the value of the tool. I could of sent the axe in for a completely new one, but I figured the new handle was easier to work with. Less back and forths to the post office.

A bit of a ding for the handle crack, but that resolved it pretty quickly. Overall, I’m satisfied with the axe and it makes a good part of my tool collection.
